I chose to create this portrait with an old black-and-white painting of mine as my reference for the highlights and shadows on the face. This allowed me to get creative with the color in this portrait, playing with crimson, yellow ochre, and cool blues and violets for the skin tone while maintaining a certain warmth. I wanted my brush strokes to be very intentional to show texture and expression, especially in the skin.
